How to move an object within an image and create images just as you want them

PowerPoint Top Tip: Move Objects Within an Image

When working on presentations, images often make or break a slide. A great visual can capture attention — but only if it works with your content, not against it.

The good news? PowerPoint now lets you move an object within an image, giving you more flexibility and creative control without needing external design tools.

Why this is useful?

Have you ever added a photo to a slide, only to realise the main subject is sitting right where your heading or key message needs to go? Traditionally, that meant re‑cropping the image, covering part of it with shapes, or opening another tool to edit it.

With this feature, you can reposition the subject inside the image itself, perfect for:

  • Creating space for headings or callouts
  • Improving the balance and layout of a slide
  • Keeping important parts of the image visible without clutter

It’s especially handy when working with photos of people, products, or locations where you want the focus shifted slightly left or right.

How it works?

  1. Select your picture on the slide
  2. Go to Picture Format → Edit picture
  3. Choose Select Area
  4. Mark the part of the image you want to move (for example, a person or object)
  5. Click Move and let PowerPoint do the hard work in the background
  6. Drag the selected area to your preferred position
  7. Right‑click the object to see additional options if needed
  8. Click Save to apply the changes to your slide

A simple upgrade to your slides

This small feature can make a big difference to how polished your presentations look. By adjusting images directly in PowerPoint, you save time and gain more control over your slide design, no graphic design experience required!

Next time an image doesn’t quite fit your layout, try moving the subject within the photo instead of redesigning the slide.
