Is Grok available to every Copilot customer?

Microsoft announced on 12 September 2026 that Grok models from SpaceXAI are available inside Copilot for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, released through the Microsoft Frontier Program as a preview. Satya Nadella marked it on X with a short post: "More model choice coming to Copilot. Welcome Grok!" 

Is Grok available to every Copilot customer?

No. Access is limited to eligible customers in the Microsoft Frontier Program, which Microsoft describes as a focused release to gather feedback on real productivity scenarios. A standard Microsoft 365 Copilot license doesn't include it.

It's also unavailable to Frontier customers in the EU, EFTA and the UK during the preview. Microsoft hasn't specified which version of Grok is being used. 

Is Grok enabled by default in Copilot?

No, and this is the detail worth noticing. Access sits behind a dedicated admin setting that is disabled by default.

How do you enable Grok in the Microsoft 365 admin center?

A Global administrator needs to allow access in the Microsoft 365 admin center, accept the legal terms, and assign access to specific users or security groups.

The role requirement is the signal here. This isn't a help desk toggle. It's a decision about third-party data processing that should involve whoever owns privacy and risk in your organisation.

The bigger shift behind the announcement

Copilot now draws on models from OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceXAI within a single interface. The question organisations ask is changing from which AI assistant should we standardise on to which model suits this particular task.
