Is the messy middle normal?

Is the messy middle normal?

Many technology projects follow a pattern where people get excited, are curious and they’re trying things. There’s energy but it then turns to the messy middle. The excitement fades. Old habits creep back. People go quiet and the change either it sticks… or it doesn’t. This might sound familiar!?

The same think can happen with a Copilot rollout and its exactly why ongoing support matters.

What’s really happening in the messy middle? People aren’t failing. They’re stuck or experimenting. They tried it once and it didn’t give a perfect answer or are still trying how to figure it all out. It's not resistance, it's the messy middle and it's an important phase. It’s where habits either form or fade. What helps people through it?

Copilot needs to be kept visible; share quick wins, even small ones! Provide hints and tips and make it easy to keep experimenting and trying; nudges work best. Don’t stop talking about it; the biggest mistake! Keep updating people what’s changing (e.g. weekly hints and tips, case studies and live webinars on what is new and continually improving).

The messy middle isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a phase to support people through. The organisations that get Copilot to stick aren’t the ones with the best launch. They’re the ones that show up in the middle, when it’s quiet, messy, and uncomfortable. That’s where real adoption happens.
