What is the difference between Copilot Library or Notes?
What Is Copilot Chat?
Copilot Chat is your AI-powered assistant built right into Microsoft 365. It's the place where you have conversations with Copilot, asking questions, brainstorming ideas, summarising documents, drafting emails, creating images, and much more. Think of it as your quick-fire, back-and-forth workspace where you get things done in the moment.
You can access Copilot Chat through the Microsoft 365 web portal, the desktop app, Teams, Outlook, or even from the Windows taskbar. It's available to anyone with a Microsoft 365 account, which means you don't necessarily need a paid Copilot license to start exploring its capabilities.
Chat is brilliant for short, focused tasks, but what happens when Copilot gives you a response you want to keep working on? That's where the Library and Pages come in.
What Is the Copilot Library?
The Copilot Library is your personal, centralised hub for all the content you've created using Copilot. It consolidates your saved Pages, images, infographics, and stories into one easy-to-find location. Rather than scrolling back through old chat conversations trying to find that draft you worked on last Tuesday, the Library keeps your structured, saved work neatly organised and ready to pick up whenever you need it.
The Library replaced the older standalone Pages menu, so if you're used to finding Pages in the left navigation, you'll now find them here instead. It's available to anyone with Copilot Chat enabled, no additional license required.
What Are Copilot Pages?
Copilot Pages are where the magic really happens. When Copilot gives you a response in Chat, say, a draft blog post, a project plan, or a meeting agenda, you can click the pencil icon to Edit in Pages. This opens your content as an interactive, editable document right alongside your Copilot Chat window.
Pages are not static. They're living, collaborative canvases where you can:
Edit and rearrange content directly on the page
Ask Copilot to refine, expand, or rewrite sections while you work
Add new content — tables, checklists, images, and more
Share the page with colleagues for real-time collaboration via Teams or Outlook
Export your finished work as a Word document or PDF
This side-by-side experience means you can keep chatting with Copilot on the left while building out your page on the right. It's an iterative process, prompt, refine, add, repeat, until you've got exactly what you need.
Chat vs Library: The Simple Way to Think About It
Here's the easiest way to remember the difference:
Copilot Chat is where your conversations happen. It's fast, flexible, and great for quick tasks.
Copilot Pages are where you turn those conversations into polished, editable content.
The Library is where all your saved Pages and created content live, so you can come back to it anytime.
Think of Chat as your brainstorming session, Pages as your workshop, and the Library as your filing cabinet. Together, they create a seamless workflow that takes you from idea to finished product without ever leaving Copilot.
Why This Matters for Your Productivity
Most people we work with at 365 Training Hub start by using Copilot Chat for quick tasks, summarising a PDF, drafting a reply, or comparing two documents. That's a great start. But the real productivity gains come when you start using Pages and the Library to build on your work over time.
Instead of copying and pasting Copilot's responses into Word documents or losing them in chat history, Pages let you save, refine, and share your work in one fluid experience. It's the difference between using Copilot as a one-off tool and making it a genuine part of how you work every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a paid Copilot license to use the Library and Pages?
No. The Copilot Library and Pages are available to anyone with Copilot Chat enabled through their Microsoft 365 account. However, the paid M365 Copilot license unlocks additional capabilities like accessing your work data (emails, files, meetings) within your prompts.
What's the difference between Copilot Pages and a Word document?
Copilot Pages are interactive canvases designed to work alongside Copilot Chat. You can ask Copilot to update, expand, or rewrite content directly on the page in real time. Once you're happy with your work, you can export it as a Word document or PDF to share more formally.
Can I collaborate with others on a Copilot Page?
Absolutely. You can share a Page with colleagues via Teams or Outlook, and they can join you to co-edit in real time, similar to how you'd collaborate in a shared Word document or Loop workspace.
Where are my Pages stored?
Copilot Pages are built on Microsoft Loop and stored in SharePoint Embedded containers. You can find all your Pages in the Copilot Library, which is accessible from the left navigation in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
