AI should support real conversation, not replace it!
That’s still true.
With the latest updates in Microsoft Teams, you can now pause or stop recording and transcription by turning Copilot off during a meeting. That means conversations are not captured when you don’t want them to be.
You can see this in action here: Watch the video walkthrough
The shift from “capture everything” to “capture what matters”
Just because we can record and transcribe everything doesn’t mean we should.
In fact, in some situations, recording everything can create unnecessary risks:
- Sensitive information being captured
- Informal comments being misinterpreted
- More data being stored than is actually needed
AI transcripts often capture everything; including side comments, incomplete thoughts, or ideas still being worked through. Once that information exists, it doesn’t just disappear. It becomes part of the digital record.
That’s why more organisations are starting to ask a simple but important question:
“Do we really need a record of this conversation?”
This is where the new Teams capability becomes powerful.
Turning off Copilot during a meeting doesn’t just disable the AI.
It also turns off recording and transcription, meaning nothing is being captured during that time.
That gives you something we haven’t really had before, control in the moment. Instead of deciding everything upfront, you can now:
- Start a meeting with transcription on
- Pause it when the conversation becomes sensitive
- Turn it back on when needed
