The hardest part of Copilot adoption isn’t the start. It’s the middle.
Many technology projects follow a pattern:
- Excitement
People are curious. They’re trying things. There’s energy. - The messy middle
The excitement fades. Old habits creep back. People go quiet. - Either it sticks… or it doesn’t.
Sound familiar? This can also happen with a Copilot rollout and it’s exactly why ongoing support matters.
- The launch goes well.
- People show up to training.
- Leaders are on board.
And then… 🦗 (crickets)
What’s really happening in the messy middle? People aren’t failing. They’re stuck.
- They tried it once and it didn’t give a perfect answer → “it doesn’t work”
- They forgot what they learnt in training → “I’ll get to it later”
- No one’s talking about it anymore → “maybe it’s not that important”
- They are not sure how it fits their role → “it’s not for me”
That’s not resistance. That’s normal.
The messy middle can feel like failure but it’s actually the most important phase. It’s where habits either form or fade.
What helps people through it? Keep Copilot visible and share quick wins, even small ones.
